"Content to Caution" Explanation and Key

Folk – I promise not to address you as “Folk” for a while after three postings with the same greeting. A new element to this year’s Lenten Film Review is a segment called “Content to Caution”. In it I’ll give a brief outline of some elements which may not be appropriate for some viewers. I hope this will be helpful to parents who want to scope out a movie before allowing their children to watch it. I’ll scrutinize the content of all the films against seven categories: Violence, Language, Drug Use, Racial Themes, Horror/Suspense, Crude Humor, and Sex/Nudity. I’ll give a 1-5 rating to each of the categories; 1 indicates few events and 5 indicates several to many events. I’ll give special notes when necessary or if they’ll help to explain my ratings. “No comment” isn’t an indication of indifference, only that there’s nothing noteworthy to say about a particular category.

Here’s the key:

Violence - (V-x)
Language - (L-x)
Drug Use - (DU-x)
Racial Themes - (RT-x)
Horror/Suspense - (H/R-x)
Crude Humor - (CH-x)
Sex/Nudity - (S/N-x)

And here’s an example:

Film Title: “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”
V-1No comment.
L-2Mostly playful banter between siblings, but some mild cursing.
DU-1Some drinking in social settings.
RT-2Racial tension is present between Greek and western cultures but almost always dissolves into good humor and some form of mutual understanding. “Opa!”
H/S-0No comment.
CH-2A running joke is made regarding the base function of Greek women; to marry Greek men, breed Greek babies, and cook Greek food until they die.
S/N-2Some kissing, including a kissing montage. Two scenes that suggests sexual intimacy.

I hope that this segment of the reviews will be helpful to you. Along with a complete grammatical proof and editing I’m also updating all of last year’s reviews (in hard copy form only) and adding the “Content to Caution” segment. If you’re interested in receiving an updated hard copy, please let me know.
